Shut your mouth! Just talkin’ ’bout Solid!

After non-paying creditors caused OtherWorld Creations to announce the halt of production on nearly all products, a partnership with Wingnut Games has allowed the much-anticipated Solid! to approach completion. Using d20 Modern rules, Solid!: The D20 Blaxploitation Experience “allows players to experience the soul, power, and action of the movies that defined a generation.” At $17.99 for a 64-page hardcover, I’d expect Solid! to sell reasonably well based on novelty alone, and if the rules are — um, solid, the book should be a strong seller when it hits stores next month.

This is yet another example of game companies combining their efforts and resources to get a product into stores, after a year of sliding product release dates and decreased sales throughout most of the industry. Heck, if Mongoose is doing the upcoming WARS RPG for Decipher, and Green Ronin is doing the new Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay for Games Workshop, why can’t the smaller guys join together and form a small Voltron too?

  1. I suspect we’ll start seeing a lot of these “studio deals” that work something like the computer game industry.

  2. Definitely. More and more over the past couple of years, products have ended up multi-company efforts, whether originally envisioned as such or not.

  3. Meh. I’ve seen a few way before this. Minds Eye Games collaborated with Fantasy Flight to release two adventure supplements for DRAGONSTAR.

Green Ronin collaborated with Paradigm Concept in publishing the OGL Interlink line. Ogre Cave mentioned it in an interview with Green Ronin:

And let’s not forget Sword & Sorcery/Arthaus/White Wolf for publishing TSR’s brand products for WotC: RAVENLOFT and GAMMA WORLD. Sovereign Press have taken over the DRAGONLANCE line by publishing supplements for WotC’s campaign setting book.

  5. This deal is different that the ones that you’re mentioning in that this one is being designed by one company and published by another.

  6. Actually, the most interesting part of Solid! coming to stores (to me, at least) is the apparent death of the product last August when OtherWorld Creations publicly announced a halt to nearly all production. Now it’s back, with the help of Wingnut Games, despite not being a proven product line or a license arrangement like those Dai mentioned.

Aldo probably got involved just so he could play it. 🙂

  7. WOW! A thread about a game I’m publishing…

For those that really want to know, the reason I asked Hyrum to publish this is because it fits with the Wingnut type of game…humorous.

The reality is that it is D20 and will only sell to a small group because it is so outrageous, but at the same time, I have never published a D20 product NOR a hardback, so I wanted to give it a try.

For those local to the Bay Area, I will have it premiering at DunDraCon!

    Best,
    Aldo
