Upper Deck adds to CCG plans

February 10, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games

So on top of the DC CCG planned for July, the Marvel CCG at the end of March, and the TMNT TCG due this month (which manages to be a mouthful despite the abbreviation), Upper Deck has more news. According to ICv2, Upper Deck plans two more collectible games: the

Sisterz are doing it for themzelvez

February 6, 2004 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games

It seems like every post I make these days is about some absurd new Hasbro initiative, but here goes: the G-rizzle has obtained some info on Star Sisterz, a collectible charm-bracelet-based game that combines the popular beaded trinkets with truth-or-dare-style questions on cards. It is actually a Wizards of the

Companies gearing up for GTS ’04

February 4, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games, Conventions, Industry, Miniatures Games, Roleplaying Games 4 comments

WizKids has announced their GTS premiere and giveaway, of course. But I’m hearing that AEG will have a surprise to give to retailers, too: the Spycraft CCG. I haven’t been able to confirm this yet, but that’s what I’m hearing. I’ve also heard that the next expansion set for the

Playtest report: Cyberpunk the CCG

February 4, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games, Playtest Reports, Roleplaying Games 2 comments

There’s a lot of buzz lately about Cyberpunk the CCG. Around my area, much of that buzz is gamers asking “What’s it like?” or “Where can I get it?” It seems some local retailers have been reluctant to buy into another collectible game, at least until it’s a verified Runaway

Duel Masters: might not suck completely

January 29, 2004 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games 5 comments

After reading the article in Undefeated and hearing opinions from a couple of local retailers, I have to say that it looks like Duel Masters will be a credible game design as well as an actual, good business move for WotC. If you want the next Pokemon, it makes sense

More goofy **** from Hasbro

January 13, 2004 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games

Hey, because if we combine Shadowrun Duels with Z-G, that ought to go over: XEVOZ is not just a metal band from 1979 but a new collectible action-figure-parts game from Hasbro, for the 6-and-up set. From the nicely done demo, it looks to basically be a simple dice game using

APE brings Big Top, Anathema

January 12, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games

APE Games has finally released two card game titles I’ve been waiting to have a look at: Anathema and Big Top. Of the two titles, Anathema is obviously the darker, themed around the Salem Witch Trials. Illustrated by Drew Tucker, whose murky, brooding works in Magic and Jyhad are widely

Green Ronin in 2004

January 7, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Board Games, Card Games, D20, Dungeons & Dragons, Roleplaying Games

In Green Ronin‘s annual state of the union address, company president Chris Pramas looked ahead toward plans for the new year. Citing a theme of “diversity,” Pramas mentioned several highlights on the schedule for 2004, including a card game and board game that have yet to be revealed fully. Naturally,

Much Ado About Foglios

January 5, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games, Industry

Through the help of a tipster, we learn what Studio Foglio is up to. Apparently, in an update sent to the Girl Genius Yahoo group, Phil and Kaja Foglio let fans know that the recent decision by WizKids to close its new publishing department would not affect plans to continue

Cheapass expects you to talk, die

January 2, 2004 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games

It’s on: Cheapass will be reprinting the classic Before I Kill You, Mister Bond with a new title. They just don’t know what that title will be, which is where you come in. Come up with a good name and you might win a year’s supply of new Cheapass stuff.

WotC and Pokémon settle lawsuit

January 2, 2004 Allan Sugarbaker Card Games 3 comments

Apparently, continued pursuit of legal proceedings weren’t necessary for Wizards of the Coast and Pokémon USA. The two companies have agreed to settle things out of court after WotC charged two former employees of revealing trade secrets to their new employer, Pokémon. No details have been revealed, and likely never

M:tG Darksteel: new high for pack prices, new low for expansion titles

December 31, 2003 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games

It’s official – Wizards has figured out that every other CCG in the damned world, including several of its own, sells at the $3.29 price point for just 10 or 11 cards. As the article points out, Yu-Gi-Oh is committing highway robbery on that score, but only one game at

You got your chocolate in my game mechanics!

December 26, 2003 Mike Sugarbaker Card Games, Computer and Console Games

Ever felt the need to combine Strange Adventures in Infinite Space with Magic: the Gathering? If you have, you should probably hold back, because it turns out someone already has. This is the nicest original-to-computers online CCG I’ve seen yet. (Via Penny Arcade, of course.)
