Interviews
I love contexts where you can just say “It’s Thursday, 11AM, 2010,” and everyone knows when you mean. So yeah, it’s on once again: This Just In From Gen Con is in live-from-the-show mode, and we’re doing notes. If you’re new here, shame on you! welcome! Here goes:
Subscribe to our feed if you haven’t, because we’ll be on top of the TJI notes for the whole show, plus any other tidbits we turn up.
Because we know you can’t get enough, we’re starting the week with another Gaming News Update interview. This time Lee Valentine chats with Colby Dauch of Plaid Hat Games and Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons Heroscape line. Colby has several projects in his queue, both freelance designs and new Summoner Wars releases, which Lee quizzes him on for this new episode.
By the way, if you still haven’t familiarized yourself with Summoner Wars we’ve got a review of it right here.
In our latest Gaming News Update interview, Lee Valentine chats with Chuck Kroegel of Petroglyph Games about the company’s plans to release a card game, a board game, and a PC game in the next few months, all about a single fantasy setting. Kroegel, Petroglyph’s General Manager and one of the company’s designers, goes into the details of their plans to present the world of Graxia to the greater gaming public.
We’ve all marveled at the elegant way certain games work, and the cooperative masterpiece Pandemic has impressed more than its fair share of gamers. In our latest Gaming News Update interview, I caught up with Matt Leacock, the man behind Pandemic, as he celebrated his new cooperative game, Forbidden Island. The new release was all the rage at last month’s KublaCon, and gamers came out to Dr Comics & Mr Games in Piedmont, CA to play GameWright‘s foray into cooperative games with the man himself. Have a listen for Matt’s thoughts on game design, giving “life” to games that defeat players, being nominated for this year’s Spiel des Jahres award (for Roll Through the Ages), and more.
We’ve returned from our annual pilgrimage to KublaCon (well, it was a week ago, but you get the idea), and we have a Gaming News Update interview to share from the event. Take a few minutes to check out our talk with Aldo Ghiozzi of Impressions on Free RPG Day ’10. He gives us the rundown of what to watch for at this year’s event (at a store near you on June 19th), and we discuss Free RPG Day’s success so far, the state of the roleplaying hobby, and sweet dice towers.
Planning to hit your local Free RPG Day this month? Willing to write a couple paragraphs on how it turns out at your store, and maybe send a photo or two? Drop me an email at sven (at) ogrecave (DOT) com with the subject of “Free RPG Day recruit” to help us cover the fourth annual dice-rolling free-for-all. You could see your name up in lights on the Cave wall. Actually, it’s kinda dark in here…
Let’s start this week around the Cave with an interview – specifically, an interview with Gareth Hanrahan about The Laundry RPG, due to hit stores this July. No, you won’t find stain removal tips in the details Gareth reveals. Instead, we present a far more useful briefing on what rookie agents can expect in this Delta Green-like system based on Charles Stross’ Laundry Files novels. Covert ops meets bureaucratic red tape all wrapped in a candy shell of Cthulhu Mythos – sound interesting? Then read on.
Apparently, it’s Read an E-Book Week – certainly a trendy event, what with all the Kindles, Kindle-likes, and upcoming iPads pushing the book market that direction. In order to celebrate and promote the medium, DriveThruRPG and White Wolf Publishing have a free electronic offering for gamers. Those who stop by DriveThruRPG.com before the end of this Saturday, March 13, can download a free copy of the World of Darkness rulebook. Yes, the full, 200+ page core system book from a few years back is yours for the taking. But maybe you’ve already got a queue of electronic books you’re reading your way through – what’re you reading this week?
What’s that you say? You remember when the Ogres used to have voices, echoing from deep within the Cave in podcast form? So do we. Now that some problematic software issues seem to be resolved, we’re going to ease back into some recordings of gaming goodness, starting a new episode of the OgreCave Gaming News Update. The relaunch episode kicks things off with my interview of Hero Games’ Darren Watts, recorded at DunDraCon 34 last weekend. In the episode, we briefly discuss Champions for Hero: Sixth Edition, which Hero sold preview copies of at the show. Darren also talks about upcoming 2010 releases, including early details of his Champions Beyond project, and fields unexpected questions from a young assistant interviewer (my daughter).
Have a listen, tell us what you think, and let us know if any glitches turn up. We’ll be hard at work getting the OgreCave Audio Report back up to speed as well.
Just over a week ago, we told you about Signal Fire Studios and Metamorphosis Alpha. We wanted more details though, so we went straight to Jamie Chambers, President of Signal Fire, for the skinny on plans for the MA relaunch. Our Random Encounter interview with Jamie offers a quick Q & A session on the new company and upcoming releases.
According to rumblings on the web, Revolution from Steve Jackson Games is on track to arrive from the printer a bit early. If my talk with SJ Games’ Will Schoonover at GTS ’09 is any indication, this is good news for Eurogame fans. By all reports, Revolution is a solid game, with multiple paths to victory if I’m not mistaken. Though I didn’t get a chance to try Revolution at the show (I spent the evening trying to align planetary bodies in The Stars Are Right), I’ll certainly be awaiting the game’s August (or earlier?) release.
Okay, mostly exaggerated. I’ve struggled to get this podcast recording functional for many moons (well, more like a couple moons). A few months and a hardware upgrade later, and we have, at long last, the DunDraCon ’09 episode of the OgreCave Audio Report. You’ll notice this episode takes the news bits we usually discuss at the beginning and formally makes them a distinct segment, which sounds suspiciously like our other podcast show, OgreCave’s Gaming News Update (because it is). We’ll still discuss the latest gaming news, don’t worry – but this show is mainly given over to interviews with Joseph Goodman and Aaron “Blackdirge” Rudel of Goodman Games, Steven Chenault of Troll Lord Games, Aldo Ghiozzi of Free RPG Day 2009, and various DunDraCon ’09 convention-goers. Have a listen, and deposit some comments if you like. We’ll have more for you soon.
Another convention, another salvo of OgreCave Gaming News Update interviews! This time we made it out to KublaCon ’09 in Burlingame, CA, just south of San Francisco. Four new interviews from the show are at your disposal:
Hear all the latest from this round of victims – er, interview subjects – and be sure to subscribe to make sure you get our next updates.
In case our recent GTS 2009 interviews weren’t enough, we’ve got another quick interview hot on their heels. This one’s in the form of our Random Encounter interviews, quick little engagements on a single subject. Whether you celebrate Cinco de Mayo or not today, OgreCave has brought you this Random Encounter with Darren Watts of Hero Games, regarding Hero’s new sourcebook Lucha Libre Hero. We even slipped in a question on Champions Online for you – you’re welcome.
We’ve had some delays here at OgreCave, largely due to a problem with the podcasts (and with finding enough time to fix it). However, it looks like our audio software glitch is identified and quarantined, so let’s move ahead with presenting not just some episodes, but a whole new podcast! OgreCave now presents the OgreCave Gaming News Update, a short (around 5 minutes) twice monthly podcast which gets straight to the news. Some of you will recognize the GNU as an evolution of how the OgreCave Audio Report starts, or from our initial experimental run on War Pig Radio. Well, now it’s official – get your dose of quick gaming news in podcast form right here. (Yes, we’ll have more Audio Report episodes up soon as well – more file rescuing is underway.)
You’ll find our initial run of shows listed as well, but right now I’ll just highlight the recordings from the GAMA Trade Show 2009 we finally managed to wrest from the jaws of malfunction. We’ve got five interviews from this year’s show, on a variety of subjects:
Have a listen, let us know what you think, and check back for more Gaming News Updates in the weeks and months ahead. We’ll keep you as informed as we can!
You’ve seen his name floating around the industry for years now, at companies like TSR and Wizards of the Coast, to recent ventures like The Game Mechanics and Super Genius Games, and even in Kobold Quarterly – the man, the myth, the Stan! From Star Wars and Ravenloft to d20 Modern and Call of Cthulhu, Stan! gets around. We’ve posed a few questions to the man-of-one-name to learn of his work, his play, and whether he’s a game designer or a cartoonist at heart.
The talk of fearful things continues with the first of OgreCave’s new Random Encounter interviews, in which we roll up a few questions to ask Harley Stroh of Goodman Games. The Cave Dwellers simply must know more about the upcoming Age of Cthulhu line for Call of Cthulhu, and Harley confesses enough of what he knows that we allowed him to escape again back to his lair. We’ll be prowling the corridors of the game industry for more Random Encounters in the weeks ahead, so stay tuned.
We chat with Brendan LaSalle of Pandahead Productions, creators of XCrawl, about the new fiction contest they’ve put on with publisher Goodman Games. Yes, there are prizes, and yes, one of the judges tells you exactly how to curry favor. (It should not surprise you that the judge in question is me.) Also, Allan really likes Halo 3, Steve likes Halo ActionClix (though not nearly to the same degree), and a whole lot of other stuff too. The full version of our talk with Brendan is up on our Interviews page as a separate download. Enjoy, and please to share with us your thoughts.
Assuming you got to a participating store on Free RPG Day, of course. In this episode recorded last week, I met up with Free RPG Day founder Aldo Ghiozzi and Gary of Black Diamond Games to get their respective takes on the event. Our crew also gets into other recent events, such as Go Play NW and all its indie RPG goodness. Have a listen. We’ve got more where that came from.
OgreCave lackey Steve Kani got himself out to GTS ’07… for one day. What jumped out at him while doing his rounds as a retailer? Listen to our GTS post-show show and find out. Also, a question for roleplayers: how has party unity been a factor (or not) in your games? Let us know in the comments, folks.
Allan’s interview with two D20 survivors – Goodman Games and Troll Lord games, respectively – is the meat of this show. We also report on DDC more generally, and threaten to talk about lots of other stuff. Get with it.
Steve’s prepping more video footage, so he asked me to point out Mike’s interview with Jason Mical, WizKids Marketing Director. Watch the video and learn more about WizKids’ current plans, including some tidbits on NASCAR Race Day and the Battlestar Galactica CCG.
Jason Mical of WizKids (Quicktime required)
We dragged lead Hecatomb R&D guy, Ryan Miller, to the back recesses of the press room to find out more about Hecatomb. Check out this video clip of the full interview.
Ryan Miller on Hecatomb (Quicktime required)
OgreCave’s visit to last month’s Magic: The Gathering Worlds ’04 in San Francisco now has icing on the cake: Steve’s sent in his interview with game design guru Richard Garfield. Be a fly on the wall as Richard talks about dream projects, the card game scene, and “collectible” being a bad word.
We’re still mopping up the mess from last week’s technical failure, so we’re a bit slow in getting this to you: our interview with Mike Selinker, formerly of Wizards of the Coast and Avalon Hill. The interview should have gone up right after the WizKids banquet presentation, but our website glitches had other plans. Such are the plans of ogres and men. In any case, dive in and see what Mike has to say about recent Avalon Hill games, among other topics.
As a special treat this Thanksgiving holiday, we’ve got a new interview for you to tear into. This time around, our target is Matt Forbeck, freelance author and game developer extraordinaire. From Deadlands to Space Hulk, from Redhurst to Dark Sun, Matt’s been there, done that, and still going strong. Come, pull up a seat and hear what Matt’s been up to lately and what he has to say.
