Audio Report: three story gaming interviews from Gen Con, with odd introductions

Please don’t let my little found sounds distract you from the gravity and awesomeness of our talks with Ben Lehman of Polaris, Clinton R. Nixon and Emily Care Boss of The Shadow of Yesterday and Breaking the Ice respectively, and Jonathan Walton of Push. We did get audio from some non-story-gamey stuff, but I wanted to deliver these as a triple threat. Let us know what you think below.

OgreCave review: Faery’s Tale

I’d hoped to post this last Friday, but an eye appointment and my resulting dilated pupils made for rather poor typing skills. So now we have Brian “Kuma” Hollenbeck’s look at Faery’s Tale by Firefly Games. Have a read, and see what makes this versatile-yet-child-friendly RPG tick, or look over some of our other reviews.

OgreCave review: Grand Tribunal

We’ve got a new review to squeeze in between all the Gen Con reports. Today Brian gives us his take on Grand Tribunal, the Ars Magica themed boardgame from Atlas Games. If you couldn’t make it to the Best Four Days in Gaming… well, console yourself by reading some of our reviews. EDIT: It has come to OgreCave’s attention that our Æther Source Book review may have contained errors. We have removed the review, and hope to take another stab at it when Æther Gaming Systems completes the revised edition. Our apologies.

Audio Report: the big con big pre-show

In which we call out a mess of Gen Con releases to which we look forward, and include a review from the 2d6 Feet crew of our Ogre’s Choice honoree True 20. And as always, a whole mess of other crap. Talk about it below.

Announcing the winners of the 2006 Ogre’s Choice Awards

Welcome to the Ogre’s Choice Awards, the first of our long-threatened annual awards, honoring what we of OgreCave deem to be the best products in the tabletop gaming industry. These are the games we’ve enjoyed most over the past year, and simply had to seek out, bash over the head, and drag back to our respective lairs.

The Cave Dwellers have had a taste of many great products over the past year. Now that Gen Con Indy looms once more, the year of game product releases draws to a close as the new product year is set to begin. So it behooves us to take a fond look back, remember the games that rocked, the dominant trends, and the goodies we snapped up in a frenzy of gaming lust.

The award categories and nominees were selected by OgreCave staff (and affiliated cognoscenti), then voted on by same. Products released at or after Gen Con 2005 were eligible. The nominees and winners are listed below. For more detailed discussion of this year’s Ogre’s Choice Awards, you can listen to the 2006 awards episode of the OgreCave Audio Report, our popular game industry podcast show.

Audio Report: if you squint it looks like someone announced a product

But only kind of. At last, here’s our post-Origins wrapup of what Mike saw, or at least of what he had written down. Also I share some thoughts on the actually-timely post-show interview that Paul Tevis did with Ken Hite. That’s over here and is totally worth the time if you haven’t heard it. Also, be sure and check the very end of the show (ours, I mean) for a special announcement!

Bleat helplessly in the presence of your masters!

By which I mean that comments should be working again (the phrasing is adapted from one of my favorite cards in The Shab-al-Hiri Roach - it’s inexact, I don’t have it in front of me right now BAA BAAA oh god make it stop BAAAA). I was going to solve the problem by upgrading us to Movable Type 3, but that is a much larger project than would fit in the weekend. The problem was really just that spammers made our poor little comments CGI break its brain. All fixed now. Go to town.

Audio Report: post-everything, pre-everything else

We recorded this show the day the WizKids layoffs were announced… and literally the day before the departure of Jordan Weisman was confirmed. So, we have a variety of perspectives on that, some of which have now proven false. The rest is what we thought would happen at Origins, what we think will happen at Gen Con, and the simple pleasures of Hey, That’s My Fish! In the comments, please tell us: what are the Top 5 RPGs Of All Time? Subscribe here, comment below. [Edit: oh, hey, comments don't work at all. Hopefully I can fix this no later than over the weekend.]

Audio Report: three short podcasts from Origins

The Volity team, Brennan Taylor of Indie Press Revolution, and Rob Dougherty of Your Move (publishers of Battlegrounds). I talked to them on the show floor (generally) and the sound is good, unless you try to listen with the in-page widget. So there.

Audio Report: the death of the grown-up CCG

BSG is great, and it doesn’t matter. That’s the crux of the first half of this show, with Gen Con talk comprising most of the rest. Our question to you for the comments: what, literally speaking, stops you from buying $20 worth of BSG and pretending it’s a non-collectible 2-player game? Discuss. (And subscribe.)

Audio Report: KublaCon and the business of cons

After we get through with the KublaCon recap, Chris runs down a thumbnail sketch of the business side of game conventions. I think it’s a fascinating listen. And a lot of the usual gaming goodness too. Get on it!

Audio Report: feel the hate flowing through you!

We do bring the love by the end of the show, but wow. Some of this is old news, but it’s worth it for Chris’ perspectives and, as always, for the philosophy. We get going on Gen Con, Privateer, Ptolus, D&D, The Shadow of Yesterday, Infinity, and some Spanish RPG that is rumored and unconfirmed. Bring it!

Audio Report: her first name ain’t baby, it’s Diana, Ms. Jones if you’re nasty

Another good reason to subscribe to the podcast feed: if you had, you would have heard this show yesterday. Whereas my dumb ass is just now getting around to posting it here. Anyway, this time we talk about the Diana Jones shortlist, that Star Wars starship game announcement, make wild proclamations, unbalanced assertions and bad jokes. More to come soon.

Audio Report: blue light nostalgia special

This ep’s all about fondly remembering days gone past, whether they’re the days when we used to play that game we’ve been kind of thinking about playing again, or just the day and a half when we all felt really sorry for Palladium. And um, this ep is also about Hordes and Ticket to Ride Marklin and just a lot of good things. Go!

What happens when I play a roleplaying game - like, a normal one - and two other Audio Reporters are there to see it? Hear all about it in this show with frequent guest Brian Isikoff. Fans of Fudge, True20 and those interested in roleplaying’s general place in the industry are encouraged to apply.

Audio Report: James Szubski of WizKids

In which the WK director of brand management is authorized to discuss whatever upcoming products he wants. And he pretty much does. He doesn’t out-and-out announce anything, but… let’s say that if you don’t think you could ever get excited about clicky games again, well, you might wanna listen to this (despite a couple of audio problems). It’s hot stuff. We’ve got another show ready and are clearing out our backlog fast, so subscribe now.
